A Vital Missing Christian Teaching was Removed During the Dark Ages.
The greatest of all the gifts of God is eternal life (D&C 14:7), and Jesus said in his last great High Priest’s prayer, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” Hence, the most important Missing Christian Teaching is to help you and me come to know the Father and the Son. (John 17:3) The Creeds have destroyed that knowing. We need to know the true nature of God – His character and attributes and emulate them. Did you know that Heavenly Father in His infinite love and ability to do so gave each of us a mission for our mortal journey during that pre-mortal epoch. Then following the Spirit and exercising true faith will take us back home to receive all the glorious promises offered in Eternal Life — life with God, life like God, which promises are not known in most Christian religions.
In 1990, I participated in a comparative religion debate at the University of Colorado. Each person was given seven minutes to share their religious beliefs. We had a Jewish Rabbi, a Catholic Priest, two different Protestant ministers, a leader from the Baháʼí Faith – headquartered in Haifa, Israel, and we had an atheist. I was then serving in the Denver Mission Presidency and was asked to represent our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I was able to share our beliefs including the Fatherhood of God. It was a most interesting evening, and went on for three and a half hours! I made friends and had good visits with the Rabbi and the Priest afterward — wonderful gentlemen.
The Priest said to me, “May I ask you a question?” I, of course, said, “Please.”
“Do I understand you correctly, that you believe you can become a god?” He quarried.
I responded with a question, “Did Jesus say to be perfect like our Heavenly Father is perfect?”
He responded, with an enlightened emphasis, “I never thought of that scripture in that way!”
Most of us are our own worst enemy regarding our true potential. We need to believe as the scriptures tell us that we are “children of God,” (Romans 8:16) and Their “offspring.” (Acts 17:26-29)
Knowing that the students would not be able to remember what I shared in a seven-minute summary of our religious beliefs, I prepared a handout for them. There are some fascinating information and statistics in the handout. Since then, I have updated the information, and it is available in the link listed at the end of this article.
The Fundamental Missing Doctrine
The doctrine of the literal Fatherhood of God is missing from most of Christianity, because it was taken out during the dark ages and never returned. That is the reason for this blog article; I address this most important missing doctrine — the truth of the “Parenthood of God,” because of its great and fundamental importance. Satan is subtle in replacing vital and beautiful truths with errors that placate the natural nature of us mortals.
God’s Perfect Plan
It is particularly fascinating to me that the Jaredites and the Nephites in the Book of Mormon paint the picture of the importance of our premortal state, as I described in the previous blog article, and the place where our Heavenly Parents gave birth for our spirit bodies and then sent us forth to earth. This display was part of a 4 and ½ square mile earthworks near Newark, Ohio, depicting Heavenly Father’s perfect plan of happiness. Fortunately, these earthworks were documented by Squire and Davis back in 1848, before most of them were destroyed. I share a link below describing them in some detail.
On our living-room wall, we have a picture from their book documenting this remarkable display of God’s Perfect Plan that the Jaredites and Nephites were so motivated to share with untold labor in its depiction.
It is also fascinating that as described in Revelations Chapter 12 that 1/3 of the spirit offspring of our Heavenly Parents are depicted in these earthworks, as not making it to mortality because they rejected Father’s Plan and the opportunity to have liberty and free choice – wanting to follow Satan’s promise of certain and secure salvation. In premortal Satan made the promise, “I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it…” (Moses 4:1) But hidden in Satan’s subtle plan was the loss of our agency (free-choice), and he wanted all the honor. The Savior said to the Father, “Thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.” (Moses 4:2)
The importance of the truth about pre-mortality is to know we are literally spirit offspring of Heavenly Parents and hence gods in embryo with the potential to become like our infinitely loving Heavenly Father and Mother. When we were with them there in that premortal epoch and witnessed their love and celestial greatness and goodness, we were motivated to do everything we could to be like them.
So, How do we Best Come to Know God?
Coming to know is huge! Personal revelation is paramount! The First Vision of the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Restoration helped tremendously, but Joseph reminded us that, “The things of God are of deep import; and time and experience, and careful and ponderous and solemn thoughts can only find them out. Thy mind, O man! If thou wilt lead a soul unto salvation, must stretch as high as the utmost heavens, and search into and contemplate the darkest abyss, and the broad expanse of eternity.” We cannot be saved in ignorance. (D&C 131:6) And the more knowledge and intelligence we gain in this life by diligence and obedience will give us so much the advantage in the world to come. (D&C 130:18-19)
The Prophet Joseph Smith gives us some additional counsel, “. . .when you feel pure intelligence flowing into you, it may give you sudden strokes of ideas, so that by noticing it, you may find it fulfilled the same day or soon; (i.e.) those things that were presented unto your minds by the Spirit of God, will come to pass; and thus by learning the Spirit of God and understanding it, you may grow into the principle of revelation, until you become perfect in Christ Jesus.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p151)
Clearly, it is not a small thing to come to know God. He put us here to live by faith. It is a life-time focus and effort – looking continually at our perfect exemplar, the Lord Jesus the Christ – forsaking all our sins, coming unto Him, calling upon His Holy name, obeying His voice, and keeping His commandments, then shall we see His smiling face upon us and know He is the great I AM, and that our efforts before Him are pleasing to Him! (D&C 93:1)
As we treasure up God’s word, He promises we will not be deceived, (JS-M 37), but His word must come from Him directly to be pure. Some say God’s word is the Bible. We see God’s finger print all over in the Bible, but we also see many contradictions because of the translation errors and false paradigms of the translators and writers. Brigham Young emphasized, “Should the Lord Almighty send an angel to re-write the Bible, it would in many places be very different from what it now is.” J. Ruben Clark counseled, “We can tell when the speakers [and writers] are ‘moved upon by the Holy Ghost’ only when we, ourselves, are ‘moved upon by the Holy Ghost.’ …this completely shifts the responsibility from them to us to determine when they so speak.” (When are Church Leaders’ Words the Claim of Scripture; Church News, July 31, 1954, 2) I have a whole chapter in my book entitled, What is God’s Word? www.ItsAboutTimeBook.com, and there using the scientific method, I validate the scriptures in spite of translation errors. (see also 2 Peter 1:20-21)
The Purpose of Life
Elohiym created the earth for us to gain a physical body, to house our spirit, and through the perfect plan of happiness to come back to Them in celestial realms of glory. In so doing we can fulfill our grand purpose here in mortality as described in the blog article: What is Our Purpose in Life?
In a podcast [link below] I did with Rod Meldrum, I share that our infinitely loving God will place us where we will be the happiest. It is not a heaven and hell deal! Paul tells us that in the resurrection there are degrees of glory (1 Corinthians 15:40-42: D&C 76) John 5:29 implies that the resurrection we receive will be according to the good we have done. Jesus tells us, “In my Father’s house are many mansions.” (John 14:2) They are not identical!
How blessed we are to have had these beautiful truths now made available in exciting detail for all to partake of if we will; it is our choice (2 Nephi 2:25-27). And to know because of the infinite atonement and because of our infinitely loving God, His mercy and judgment will be perfect. We will be where we will be the happiest! If we don’t love God with all our heart, might, mind, and strength and our neighbor (including our enemies) as ourselves, we will not be with those who do! The wicked would be more miserable in heaven than they would be with the damned souls in hell. Let us “look to God and live” the fullness He has lovingly offered us if we will but follow Him, (Alma 37:47) and come to TRULY KNOW OUR INFNIITLY LOVING FATHER AND MOTHER, and THEIR BELOVED SON that we may receive our divine potential and be like THEM!
