“Whosoever Treasureth Up My Word
Shall Not Be Deceived”
This promise in the title is repeated three times in scripture (JS Matthew 24:30; JS Mark 13:26; JS-M 37). Satan is the great deceiver, and to be not deceived by him is of paramount importance in our path to eternal life. This promise is ours as we “treasureth up my word, “ we shall not be deceived. How important is that? In further profoundness, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life…” (John 14:6) And “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (8:12) The ancient church used to be called, “THE WAY!”
What is God’s Word?
When He says, “…my word…” what does He mean? If we ask most people, “What is God’s word?” they would say, “It is the Bible!” When we think about it, we come up with some interesting and very relevant questions as to what He may mean by, “my word.”
Certainly, we know God’s word is His word coming from His mouth; it is pure Truth, because He cannot speak otherwise. In fact, He doesn’t even need to speak; He can communicate mind to mind in purity. Many prophets and prophetesses over the ages have had the privilege of hearing His word – pure and sweet. How grateful we should be for His word coming from Him. We should especially be grateful for truths that have been restored in this “Promised Land” of America complementing the Bible.
Adam and Eve walked and talked with God
He talked with each of us in our premortal sphere and gave us instructions that would best help us in our mortal journey as explained in Chapter 2 of my book, and those instructions are still resident in our intelligence that were downloaded into our mind at birth. We do not remember His Words to us because of the veil that was also placed so that we could live here by faith and have the opportunity to grow in so doing. In other words, we have the exciting Truth that His Word is resident in each of our intelligences which we can access through faith and obedience to His commandments, and by asking Him to reveal our missions to our hearts and minds and which are unique for each of us. We have the enormous promise that “He that keepeth his commandments receiveth truth and light until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.” (D&C 93:28)
The Savior did this perfectly. Following the Savior’s example, the best thing we can pray for in humility is, “Thy will be done.” As we choose to follow His will, He can and will lead us on that path that is best for us in His infinite wisdom and His infinite love. We can totally trust in Him. He worked out a perfect and infinite atonement — opening the door for us, as we have faith in Him and repent of all our sins, to enter into eternal realms of joy with God and our loved ones, who choose to follow Him as well.
Because of His infinite love, He tailors “my [His] word” personally for each of us to best help us in our path back to the Father. His Plan of Happiness is perfect even with all our sins and imperfections. His scriptures are of infinite depth, and as we read them, search them, feast upon them, the messages and inspirations we receive will be just for us, which for me is remarkable and a direct manifestation of His infinite love for each of us. We should not worry about how others interpret the scriptures. The Holy Ghost will enlighten them as well as us as we all pray to know the TRUTHs of God, for each of us has a different path in life.
Prayer is the Most Often Repeated Commandment
Because of His infinite love, prayer is the most oft-repeated commandment in the scriptures. His answers to our prayers are tailored just for us to best help us on our path to eternal life – life with God, life like God, (Matthew 5:48) and a fullness of joy. The Lord has wisely counseled us to, “Pray always, that you may come off conqueror; yea, that you may conquer Satan, and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work.” (D&C 10:5) There are twice as many good angels, who desire to help us in our life’s journey (Moroni 7:24-32), as there are angels assisting the devil in his deceitful work (Rev. 12:1-4). God’s angelic assistance is there for us 24/7, as we reach out in prayer to know His will in our lives (2 Nephi 32:1-4).
The Prophet Mormon shares Alma’s profound counsel:
And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just – yea, it had had a more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them – therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God. (Alma 31:5)
God’s word from His scriptures, from prophets and prophetesses, from what God reveals to our minds and hearts as we pray, and from the righteous influence of others, who have our eternal welfare at heart, are all designed to lead us back home to Him to receive the greatest of all the gifts of God — Eternal Life.
It’s Our Choice
Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy. And the Messiah cometh in the fulness of time, that he may redeem the children of men from the fall. And because that they are redeemed from the fall they have become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act for themselves and not be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law at the great and last day, according to the commandments which God hath given. Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh, and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. (2 Nephi 2:25-27)
In his first talk as President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Russell M. Nelson wisely counseled that even though we have prophets, the Church, and scriptures, “But in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.”
I pray with all my heart that we will treasure up His “my word” and that we will receive the enormous, unfathomable blessings in store for the righteous. His arms are outstretched to receive us into eternal bliss designed by our infinitely loving Heavenly Father. Praise and honor be to His Holy Name. We cannot say enough good about what He has done, is doing, and will do for us. As Joshua most meaningfully counseled, “…choose ye this day whom ye will serve; …but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) AND TREASURE UP HIS WORD AND WE SHALL NOT BE DECEIVED!
