Heavenly Father has infinite love for each of us, and through His Beloved Son, He has done, is doing, and will do infinite good on behalf of His children.
So as God is going about doing infinite good, so can we, as we focus our time and talents in prayer to know how we can bring about the greatest good. There is no limit to the amount of good we can do as we ask, seek, and knock (Matt 7:7-8); He has an infinite supply of good that we can tap into. If we do what we do with an eye single to His glory, then that maximizes the good we can do. He will not only bless our efforts; we will have joy in the doing and in the service we render to others.
God’s Ways are Higher than Man’s Ways
Isaiah shares this profound perspective (Isa. 55:8-9) “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
My family and I had moved to Boulder, Colorado, with a goal to get a Ph.D. in physics hoping to return to BYU, where I had graduated. I had hoped to return and to teach and do research at BYU. In the meantime, I had accepted a job with the Frequency Standards Section at the National Bureau of Standards. They were paying for my graduate work at the University of Colorado if I worked full time. This looked like an ideal path for us.
Atomic clocks were relatively new, and how to best use them and characterize their performance was under investigation. Back then, I chose as my master’s thesis topic, “Statistics of Atomic Frequency Standards.” which fit nicely with my employment. My boss and mentor, Jim Barnes introduced me to the book Fourier Analysis and Generalized Functions by Sir Michael James Lighthill. With Jim’s help, this book, and the Lord, I was given a way to characterized atomic clocks. To say the least, it was a busy time for us, and we had no clue at the time where this thesis would be used, but the Lord knew.
My Faith Was Tested
At that time, I had a profound learning experience in relation to the above scripture, as I was also asked to serve in a leadership position in the Boulder Ward for our church. I saw this as cross-grain to my goals – believing I would not have time for family, work, school, and to serve in a bishopric.
Knowing that God answers prayers, I entered into what was probably the most intense fasting and prayer time in my life. On the fourth day, the Spirit whispered that this was His call and that it was preparation for me to serve as a bishop.
A year later, I was called as the Bishop of the Boulder Second Ward, which I accepted because I knew the Lord’s ways were better than my ways. Because I accepted this call and trusted in Him rather than do things my way, I believe that the Lord gave me the inspiration for my thesis.
A year later my thesis was published in the Proceedings of the IEEE, and has become one of the most cited publications to come out of the Department of Commerce. I used it in the design of the AT-1 time scale algorithm I believe the Lord inspired me to write to optimally combine the readings of an ensemble of atomic clocks to generate official time for the USA. With improvements by my gifted colleagues, AT-1 is still generating official time for the USA today.
Later, the Allan variance, which came out of my thesis, was used to characterize the performance of the high-quality atomic clocks needed for GPS, which are the heart of its accuracy. I was also asked to help in the development of GPS.
In 1981, the Lord also gave me the inspiration for the Modified Allan variance (MVAR), and it has become an important metric for the international navigation community. Then some years later, the telecom community came to me for help, and we gave them the Time variance (TVAR). And once I learned this very valuable lesson that the Lord will inspire us in all areas of our lives, if we will but sincerely ask, seek, and knock, several other major inventions came to me from our loving Lord.
I share this not to boast or to make anyone believe I am more brilliant than they, but to show God’s love in my life as I have found the profound significance of the above scriptures that as we do things with an eye single to His glory there is no limit to the good we can do in any endeavor. I truly believe when we trust God in all that we do, including directing our gifts and talents, we can reach our full potential in “Doing Infinite Good”
And the Greatest of all Good
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Begotton Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) The infinite atonement not only opens the door for the greatest of blessings possible in God’s perfect plan of happiness for all of His children, but He will redeem the world as well making a new heaven and a new earth. Christ’s resurrection is the best documented and the most important miracle in the history of the earth and is bringing and will bring infinite good to Heavenly Father’s children.
How blessed we are to have the gospel of Jesus Christ and the fullness thereof: It is not only the “good news,” it is the BEST NEWS! Bringing souls to Christ is the most important fruit He wants us to bring; these are the joyous treasures in heaven. Then are we true disciples of Christ. (John 15:8) As we seek to do good with an eye single to His glory in all that we do, the amount of good we can do is gloriously infinite!
Interestingly, because of the technical success the Lord has blessed me with, now I am able to share the gospel across the globe with my book, which brings a grand harmony to true science and true religion, while scientifically validating the scriptures. I REJOICE IN HIM!
