What Is Truth

What is TruthWhen Pilate asked Jesus, “What is truth?” Pilate told the Jews he was satisfied with his answer and could “find in him no fault at all.” (John 18:38)  Jesus had already answered this question for His disciples: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)  The early followers of Jesus called the Christian movement, “The Way.”  Jesus is the way back to the Father and the greatest of all the gifts of God — Eternal Life. (highlights mine)

He extended the great promise, “If any man will do his will, he shall KNOW of the doctrine, whether it be of God or whether I speak of myself.” (John 7:17) In other words, if we live the doctrine He is teaching, we can know it is true by the fruits. Wherefore by their fruits, ye shall know them.” (Luke 6:43-44)

In our day, the Lord has profoundly, declared, “And truth is a knowledge of things as they are, as they were, and as they are to come.” (D&C 93:24)  I have found this definition of the Lord’s to be mind-expanding.  As an example, there are 1800 phrases in our scriptures that tie to this definition of truth and back to the language of Adam.

When these 1800 phrases are studied, we see direct evidence of God placing them as they are through his prophets.  It would be humanly impossible for them to be as they are, otherwise.  I am glad that LDS Living has an article based on this perspective from my book.  It goes a long way in helping us know the TRUTH, which is to come to know the Father and the Son and gain eternal life. (John 17:3)

The Bible Debate

Over ninety percent of the leading scientists in America believe the Bible is not true.  Joseph in Egypt prophesied of this day and that the Book of Mormon would come forth validating the Bible (2 Nephi 3:11)  I believe the information in the above links is helping to fulfill Joseph’s prophesy.  I believe this kind of information is critically needed to combat the Babylonian encroachment on Christianity.

How to Not Be Deceived

And whosoever treasureth up my word, shall not be deceived, for the Son of Man shall come, and he shall send his angels before him with the great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather the remainder of his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (JS-Matthew 1:37)

Christ is The Word and His word is TRUTH. As we treasure up Him in our lives and His word, we have His incredible promise that we will not be deceived.  How valuable is that?

Definition of His Gospel

We often hear in testimonies stating, “I know the Church is true.”  I ask myself the question, “Do they know, or is it their faith?”  What do the scriptures say?  The Lord says it is His Church if it is called in  His name and “if it so be that they are built upon my gospel.” (3 Nephi 27:8)

Then in verses 13-22 He defines the gospel in most succinct terms. .”…Now, this is the commandment: REPENT all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be BAPTIZED in my name, that ye may be SANCTIFIED by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand SPOTLESS before me at the last day.”

vs. 21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, THIS IS MY GOSPEL and ye know the things that ye must DO in my church; for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do; for that which ye have seen me do even that shall ye do;

The Warning

In November 1831, after the Lord had restored His Church through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Lord said it is, “…the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased, speaking unto the church collectively and not individually–” (D&C 1:30)  Then, only ten months later in September 1832, He warns:

...the whole world groaneth under sin and darkness even now.  And your minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, and because you have treated lightly these things you have received– Which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation.  And this condemnation resteth upon the children of Zion, even all.  And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon and the former commandments which I have given them, not only to say, but to do according to that which I have written– That they may bring forth fruit meet for their Father’s Kingdom; otherwise there remaineth a scourge and judgement to be poured out on the children of Zion. (D&C 84:53-58)

I was sitting in the tabernacle on Temple Square and heard Ezra Taft Benson, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, say that condemnation had not been lifted.  From the scriptures then, all we can truly say is that we are the “only true church under condemnation.”

For me, the Church is made of imperfect people helping each other to perfection, and it works because it is the Lord’s work and only Christ can perfect us as we come unto Him. (Moroni 10:32-33)  The key to overcoming this condemnation is to be Christ-centered in all that we do (D&C 1:36), and not have one toe in Babylonian activities.  The Book of Mormon, a joint witness with the Bible, is the best book to take us there.

Babylon Take-Over

In the Book of Mormon, we are told of blessings and cursing that will fall upon the Gentiles of this nation.

“And it shall come to pass, that if the Gentiles shall hearken unto the Lamb of God in that day that he shall manifest himself unto them in word, and also in power, in very deed, unto the taking away of their stumbling blocks. “

“And harden not their hearts against the Lamb of God, they shall be numbered among the seed of thy father; yea, they shall be numbered among the house of Israel; and they shall be a  blessed people upon the promised land forever; they shall be no more brought down into captivity, and the house of Israel shall no more be confounded.” (1 Nephi 14: 1-2)

The greatest challenge Christianity has today is the secular and materialistic encroachment.  Babylon seems to be taking over and we are risking the protection the Lord has promised.

The Savior also warned of this day and said “…when the Gentiles shall sin against my gospel, and reject the fulness of my gospel…” (3 Nephi 16:10-11) then, He says, “I will bring my gospel unto them [Israel]. We as a  Gentile nation will only be numbered among them only if we repent and come unto Christ. Those who have taken sacred covenants are not exempt from this mandate.  We need to take this message seriously — share it and live it — and repent as individuals and as a nation. Time is running out.

Disturbing LDS Conversion Stats

I have kept track of the converts per thousand members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over the last five decades.  Back in the time when President Kimball and President Benson were the prophets, we reached a peak of 47.4 converts/thousand.  Now we are down to 14.4.  I did a linear regression analysis of this data over the last four decades, and the trend extrapolates to no converts in 17 years.

I know the Lord has a solution to this Babylonian encroachment as we are now in that time period the Savior prophesied would come as Israel is being gathered from the four corners of the earth.  Let us help Him in this exciting process as President Nelson has asked us to do.

The Truth is….

The TRUTH is…. Christ is, “The way, the truth, and the life.”  As we treasure Him and His word up, we will not be deceived.  As he profoundly taught, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)  And he means free individual, as well as nationally.  Zion (the pure in heart, who shall see God (Matt. 5:8) is coming and we can be part of it, and it is about knowing the truth, who is Christ, and both living and sharing it.  Elder Neil Maxwell said, “If you are not sharing the gospel, you are not living the gospel.”  The equivalent positive statement is: “We are living the gospel as we share it.   Let us both share and live His glorious gospel message as did the ancient Christians and as did the early converts when the Church was restored, and repent of all our sins — even our favorite ones!  “Herein is my Father glorified, as ye bring forth fruit; then are ye my disciples.” (John 15:8)  Let us be true disciples of Christ.
