How Do I Receive Personal Revelation

What does personal  revelation mean? One definition of personal revelation is: “Direct communication from god to an individual.” As a scientist, I say that personal revelation is like having your own GPS connected to Heavenly Father. You may ask, How do I receive personal revelation and tap into to my unique GPS.  Let me explain:

GPS is a great tool, and it was exciting being part of its development. It allows us to find our way in this physical universe of time and space. However, time and space are mortal constraints and can be a distraction if we become to dependent upon them.  Personal revelation is not limited by time nor space. God and His angels are not limited in time and space; neither need we be.

My Personal Revelation GPS Experience

While on a business trip, I found that I have a personal GPS that is more fine tuned than any physical tool, such as a GPS receiver or a cell phone .

In 2015 I was invited to give a key note talk, write a paper, and chair a panel at an international navigation conference in St. Petersburg, Russia.  My initial feelings were not to go. That represented a lot of work and traveling at my age is not easy; plus, I would know very few people there as it was not the time and frequency community, which is where I have spent my career.

Ask and ye shall receive

But, when I put the question on the alter and asked the Lord, I got an affirmative that I should go. When I accepted, they treated me like a king. They put me in first class in seat 1A and I had a full length bed to sleep in from Salt Lake to Amsterdam.

Since I needed to do a jet lag adjustment, I arrived on Saturday and planned to go to church on Sunday.  On our churches web site, I found that there were three wards there. The closest one was five miles away from the conference hotel. I got the address and gave it to a taxi driver.

When he dropped me off, I could see on the huge apartment complex in front of me that I had the right address, but I could see absolutely nothing LDS.  I walked around and into the complex for about a half hour with no success.

Listen to your heart

My plan was to go to church and hopefully find a member who would drive me back after church to the conference hotel, as I have done on other such occasions.  I had a feeling, even before taking the taxi ride, that I might have to walk back and felt that I could even though I was nursing a hobo spider bite in my left ankle at the time and was wearing sandals.

I put my trust in the Lord and I ended up walking straight back to the hotel without a street map; besides, I couldn’t read the Russian street signs anyway. I joked with my colleagues the next day. “I found something better than GPS!” As I told them my experience, I then said, “Follow your heart!” God knows the way and will never lead you astray. God has given us an inherent guidance system called personal revelation, which if we will follow, he will guide us in our daily lives.  More than anything, He wants us to come back to Him.

Personal Revelation is Better Than GPS

Now that we understand there is something better than GPS for navigating our lives, why don’t we use it. The modern world is looking for technological solutions for everything.

Trusting in the Lord completely opens the door for personal revelation, our personal GPS guide.  “Proverbs 3:5-6.  Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all they ways acknowledge Him and he shall direct they paths.”

Believe that he will do this for you personally.  Open the heavens by “Believing.”  Ether 4:14. Come unto me, O ye house of Israel, and it shall be made manifest unto you how great things the Father hath laid up for you, from the foundation of the world; and it hath not come unto you, because of unbelief.

Also, if we will start each day trusting and believing and humbly asking, “Thy will be done, not my will,” we will find that our lives will change for the better instantly.  He is always there to hear our prayers; THIS I KNOW.

Our Loving Father in Heaven gave each of us a mission, which would be best for us in our pre-mortal sphere before we came here.  As we listen to our inner navigation system (GPS), we will not only receive personal revelation as a daily guide but we will find our way home to a fullness of joy with God and our loved ones.  Indeed, we will receive the greatest of all the gifts of God, Eternal Life.

The Savior did this perfectly by doing the will of the Father.  Ironically, the best thing we can do is to give to the Lord the only thing we have to really give – our will.  Only then can we become totally free – of sin and from anything that would keep us from having the greatest happiness here and a fullness of joy in the life to come.
