Brain research has revealed the miracle of the human brain. The marvel of the brain is manifest in every field and area of our lives. Whether it is chemistry, mathematics, medicine, religion, architecture, technology, just to name a few, its power has been largely unappreciated. By ignoring the fact that the human brain is more powerful than anything in this world we often miss the reality that no computer system has the capacity to store and interchange so much information in such as small space. It has the power of infinite intelligence, even beyond this physical world.
Getting Smarter is Not Harder!
Dr. Marion Diamond, UC Berkeley, demonstrated in the 60s that neurons can be grown in the brain at any age. Her research was so successful that she was allowed to do the autopsy on Einstein’s brain to see how it was different. It was! Her book, Magic Trees of the Mind, is a must read. I was so impressed with her work that I wrote a book report on it:
Drawing on the work of Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard, she shares that there are seven learning centers in the brain: These are:
- math and logic
- spacial representation,
- physical skills,
- interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, and
- knowledge of nature.
For me, number 7 is the manifestation of God’s love everywhere. It is good to develop all seven, and if more than one of them is developed simultaneously then there is cross fertilization across the neurons – enhancing those learning centers involved.
The Effects of Music On the Human Brain
Perhaps you have heard of the Mozart effect. For example, if you study math while listening to beautiful music then the retention improves. I listen to the Book of Mormon in French while I am exercising with a triple benefit in doing so. It has been 19 years since we served as missionaries in Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa, and I can now go to the English version of the Book of Mormon and find the verse I am listening to in the French.
The movie, Music of the Heart, dramatizes the inspiring true story of Roberta Guaspari teaching children in Harlem, NY, to play the violin and the great benefits of doing so.
But, regarding music the opposite is true; hard rock has been demonstrated to destroy brain cells and loud music is deleterious to a person’s hearing. So in general terms, developing these seven learning centers in a positive way enhances a person’s intelligence. My personal joke at age 81 is: “I try to learn faster than I forget!”
The Effect of Stress on the Brain
I was so impressed with Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa’s book, Brain Longevity, that I incorporated much of his information in a health article, Health and the Abundant Life. Khalsa shows how stress can kill millions of neurons per day; it is a killer to the brain, and I have his recipe in my book, It’s About Time, on how to deal with stress and the importance of meditation. Dr. Khalsa’s mediation exercises were so successful that he offered a course for doctors getting ready to take their board exams. He says, “I showed all of them how to meditate, and how to apply the mental training techniques of peak performance. …the doctors taking my course had over a 90-percent pass rate, compared to the national average of about 50-percent.” That we live in a high stress level society is a given. How to deal with it is key.
Dr. Khalsa’s meditation and stress management exercise is simple and effective. I also have it in an article on the book’s web site: The Effect of Diet on the Brain
I discuss the work of Dr. Brant Cortright, who wrote the book The Neurogenesis Diet, in the article, Preventing Dementia and Alzheimers, he assumes an evolutionary model for human kind and his approach is diet centered — showing how Americans are killing themselves – in my pet phrase, “digging their graves with their teeth.” His information is useful, but here, I go beyond that with additional insights from other researchers and from our work.
The Mind Operates Outside of the Body
Our youngest son, Nathan, and I listened to a fascinating talk by Dr. Dean Radin at the Electric Universe Conference in Albuquerque, NM, in 2013, where he shared some exciting results showing the mind is not constrained to the brain. Radin not only shared solid data showing that ESP works — using a Faraday cage to block any electromagnetic signals — but that it also had no-time-delay using a global set of folks to participate and find that result. As I listened to his talk, I predicted the no-time-delay result he shared from our Unified Field Theory work, as described in Chapter 21 of my book, It’s About Time. In other words, ESP is not limited by the speed of light.
Dr. Rupert Sheldrake shows similar results to those of Dr. Radin’s that the mind operates outside the body as well as in. The implications of their results are enormous, but mostly unappreciated. As I discuss in Chapter 22, realizing this dimension to our body, mind, and spirit opens up our ability to learn the TRUTHS of God in this marvelous universe He has created for us to enjoy. We move from being limited by the five senses to what we may call our sixth sense and couples us into what I call the eternity-domain.
Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, Chauncey C. Riddle, has shown in his book, Think Independently, that a false proposition was assumed during the last century by scientists and historians that to do good science or good histories then anything spiritual or including God needed to be excluded. This proposition is based on Darwin’s organic evolutionary model for mankind and is deleterious to learning and especially to gaining wisdom and understanding the TRUTHS of God.
Opening Up Spiritual Channels
When we open the prayer and meditation channel to learn the TRUTHS of God, we open the door to all truth as we access the author of all TRUTH. The most important truths I have learned in my life have been through prayer and, for me, this applies for both religious and scientific truths.
As Professor of literature and religion, Terryl Givens of Richmond University, shares what happened in the Spring of 1820 changed the course of American history and will change the world. Givins says, that the Prophet Joseph Smith succeeded in creating a community with no real parallel- and few precedents- in the history of the world. See: Video Below: Lightning Out of Heaven.
As Joseph Smith knelt in prayer, that reached beyond the veil of this world that Spring morning, the Father and Son appeared to him. He learned not only the true nature of a loving Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son, he later learned that we are the offspring of God – that each of our spirits was born in a pre-mortal era. This opened the revelation that the most important unit in time and in eternity is family, and that man can have a personal relationship with a loving Father in Heaven and His Beloved Son. As Professor Givens pointed out in his talk, this fired the souls of all who gained a knowledge of this eternal-far-reaching philosophy.
One of the several TRUTHS coming out of the restoration brought about by God through the Prophet Joseph Smith is that there are two promised lands – the one spoken of in the Bible and the one described here in North America. This second Promised Land spoken of prophetically by Isaiah is to be an ensign to the nations carrying the gospel to all of Father’s children and showing them how to be the recipients of the infinite and eternal atonement of our Lord and Savior.
Because of the great mission of this Promised Land, Satan is in an all-out battle to spread atheism and moral decay and to turn the people of this land away from the God of this Land, who is Jesus Christ. In this regard, the prophecies are clear, if the people of this land do not repent, they will be cut off at the Lord’s coming.
How blessed we are to have scriptures coming forth from this New World as well as the Bible from the Old World, and to learn the TRUTHS of God from both – to grow in wisdom, light, and learning. Here I close with a beautiful and appropriate scripture from the Doctrine and Covenants given to Joseph Smith the Prophet of this last dispensation of the gospel:
D&C 109: 7 And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom, seek learning even by study and also by faith;
8 Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing, and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;
It seems the world is about entertainment and not about learning. In my book, I turn around the phase, “Live and learn,” to “Learn and live” the abundant life promised by the Savior. (John 10:10). And ironically, the meek and humble and not the proud are open to the TRUTHS of God and use the human brain to reach learning beyond this world.
