Mormon Sugar Consumption

Sugar consumption in Utah has increased to epidemic levels. More than 60 percent of Utahans are Mormon, who generally refrain from coffee, tea, alcohol and tobacco. However, sugar treats are an acceptable, an ever-present component at family and LDS church gatherings. According to Bloomberg, a research company, Utah is known now as the “Sweet Tooth Capital of the United States,” consuming twice as much candy than any other state in America.

Sugar-Laced Soda

If  BYU is any indicator of Soda consumption within the predominate LDS populace, Mormons rank very high in consuming sugary soda as well. As stated in the Daily Universe, the school’s newspaper, “Culturally it is almost a fad to be drinking soda constantly within the LDS demographic.”

More than a dozen soda shops have opened in Utah County since 2013. On a weekday in July, Swig, successful soda shop served 838 customers.

Perhaps you have heard the bad joke; the way to tell a Mormon from a non-Mormon is by the temperature of their caffeine.

LDS Living reports that LDS obesity is evident when you visit various LDS wards. “You might observe that 70%+ of adults over 35 years of age are overweight and nearly 45% of Mormon youth tip the scales (consistent with USA population obesity rates.)”

Why is this the case when Mormons believe and have accepted a health code, the Word of Wisdom, which offers wisdom to the wise?

I Reach Out To You

Lovingly, I reach out to you with some wisdom from the Lord that has far reaching significance.  “In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation.” (D&C 89:4)  “This word of wisdom” is not only relevant to the food we eat and what we drink, but perhaps in greater measure we “shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures.”

As we walk “in obedience to [all] the commandments, we “shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.” (89:18-20)  “And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.” (89:21). Is this why Americans are experience epidemic diseases?

Satan knows America is the “Promised Land,” given to the seed of Joseph – the birthright son of Israel (Genesis 49:22-26) — and he is doing everything he can to destroy Americans – spiritually,  physically,  mentally, and emotionally.  He knows it is his last hour before the Lord comes.

1.  The United States has the highest health costs per capita in the world, and yet the US is ranked 34th according Bloomberg 2017 Healthiest Country Index.

2. Emotional crutches are increasing in the US with the wide use of drugs, (Prozac for depression etc. ), alcohol, and pornography.  Instead of turning to the Lord, many Americans are using all these crutches and dying of “disease,” and are not receiving the protection the Lord promised by keeping all the commandments.

Sweet and Dangerous

Even though Utah is known for high consumption of candy, a Gallup poll finds that 48 percent of U.S. adults say they drink at least one glass of soda a day

In Dr. David Williams newsletter, Alternatives for the Health Conscience Individual, Vol. 21, No. 6 June 2018, he writes, “When it comes to destroying health, sodas are basically liquid cigarettes.” He further says, “As I’ve traveled the world over the last 40 years, you can visibly track the deterioration of health in a country based solely on the introduction and acceptance of sodas and vegetable oils into their diet.” Most of America’s processed foods are made with vegetable oils and sodas are laced with sugar and most often high fructose corn syrup.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

Author, Michael Pollan documents in his New York Times #1 bestselling book, Omnivore’s Dilemma, the disaster our industrialized food system has created – being almost the total cause of all the epidemic diseases that afflict our western society. Fortunately, organic foods are coming back.

Pollan further shows that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is pervasive in the American diet, and it is in almost all soft drinks. It has become the preferred sweetener in a large and increasing percentage of processed foods. It is the cheapest sweetener and prolongs the life of that to which it is added.

From pure economics it was a major breakthrough when it was developed in the 1960s. Its use started in the 1970s, and now it is a challenge to buy food without it. But if you care about your health, you better look at labels and avoid it like a plague.

From a health standpoint, it is subtle disaster. HFCS is linked as one of the main causes of the obesity epidemic as well as to the diabetes epidemic. It tends to suppress the satiation sense, so that when we have eaten enough, we don’t know it and overeat. It also tends to be addictive. Its abundance in the American diet – especially in sodas — is often causing liver problems. As a synthesized sugar, the body doesn’t know how to digest it and turns it into fat.

When I learned from Pollan that HFCS “is the most valuable food product refined from corn, accounting for 530 million bushels” [in 2006], I was aghast. This is a major conspiratorial activity where the rich get richer at the expense of your health, and you are paying for it through your taxes and because it is a fossil-fuel-based industry, as Michael proves so profoundly.

The middle-man folks doing the processing, who make most of the profits from this cheapest and most pervasive of all sugars in America, would not let Michael review their processing procedures. It was discovered in 2009 that some HFCS had mercury in it at harmful levels. It seems the manufacturers have responded to this. They, however, don’t bother to tell you that it is still a poison to the body.

There are about 200 different kinds of sugars and only a few of them are really good for you.  My wife and I suggest honey, raw maple syrup, stevia, Xylitol, for example. Unfortunately, table sugar is a poison to the body and is contributing to a lot of society’s health challenges.

Suggested Books

Read the books, Sweet and Dangerous by John Yudkin and Sugar Blues by William Dufty.  Dr. Lorraine Day has a CD, Eye See; Prevent and Reverse Eye Diseases, in which she documents the causes and the cures for many eye diseases. This is well worth listening to. She shares how sugar consumption is a principle contributor to cataract formation and other eye problems as well. I used to wear glasses; now I don’t. The sugar and HFCS in sodas is contributing in a major way to the epidemic of obesity.

Grow a Garden

Growing your own food when and where you can is best.  Avoid processed foods as much as you can.  Buying organic helps.  Supporting coops and farmer’s markets are excellent choices.  There is a tendency to avoid fatty foods; there are good fats and bad fats.  You will find both the quality and taste to be greatly improved in fresh foods.  Foods in their season also helps.  The taste of food in our garden is “mouth watering.”

Live an Abundant Life

The “Word of Wisdom” the Lord gave us is the Savior’s way of turning from the world and enjoying the “Abundant life” He promised.  Let us realize that “sweet is dangerous” and “sodas are basically liquid cigarettes.”  Let us be healthy and wise and free of disease.
